Churchill War Rooms

Explore the Churchill War Rooms where Winston Churchill and his team led the war during World War II.

This tour takes place underground in the secret lair and wartime bunker of Sir Winston Churchill. I will describe how it would have felt working and living underground during the tense days and nights of WW II and the Blitz. Unchanged since 1945, history has been frozen in time in the hallowed halls of the Churchill War Rooms waiting for you to experience.

Constructed in 1938, Churchill’s underground bunker in the heart of central London is a must-visit for anyone with an interest in World War II.

Duration: 1.5 - 2 hours

Availability: Daily

Highlights include:

  • Hear the story of why this underground complex was built in the first place. Were the British anticipating an air raid?

  • See the Cabinet Room, Transatlantic Telephone Room, Map Rooms, Broadcasting Room, Kitchens, Bedrooms and much more.

  • Visit the Churchill Museum, dedicate to the everything relating to Churchill, his life and family.

  • Discover Churchill’s personal life, including his controversial early political career and how his parents' influence changed the man he became.

  • Peek into ‘The Dock’ where teams stayed overnight during air raids.

  • Hear fascinating stories of what it was like working in this underground office, why typewriters had to be specially adapted, and how Selfridges department store helped win the war!

  • Also hear personal stories passed down to me from my Grandparents and how my father was lucky to survive the blitz.

Why not combine this tour with a visit to Westminster Abbey, to see a memorial dedicated to Winston Churchill and Franklin Roosevelt. Alternatively, you can take a tour of Royal London including seeing The Changing of the Guard, which is very close to the Churchill War rooms.
